Who Am I?

Hello! My name is Amrita. I am 26 years old, a bit of an oddball, dark sorceress of vegan recipes, and a board certified cat lady too. I’m not your usual vegan food blogger – I’m decked out in almost 30 (and counting) tattoos and I’m straight forward, sometimes cynical and blunt as a butter knife. Most people find me HILAAAAAARIOUS, others just think I’m legitimately clinically crazy.  I trained at and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu London and I love getting creative in the kitchen. I was a vegetarian for most of my life and have been a Vegan for almost 3 years now. I am someone who is absolutely passionate about Animals and I definitely prefer them to most human beings, cos I mean, who wouldn’t right? I am a Mommy to 4 amazing cats, Richard, Bingo, Pudding and Ebichu! THEY ARE MY LIFE!

So glad I finally stumbled upon your site. I'd been looking for a tiramisu recipe I could actually follow without all that crazy stuff you mentioned. It was the most amazing dessert! I'm going to dazzle them at a vegan party coming up and tell them where I found the recipe. Your site is great and I'm planning on trying several more of your recipes. From 1 crazy and vegan cat lady to another - Thank you!

Good on you for feeding your fur babies diets that they should have, not whatever fad is out there these days! My kitties eat a high quality grain free kibble - grains are the usual #1 culprit for allergy and skin issues in dogs and cats. (Yes, I'm a bona fide self-professed crazy cat lady too!) Just signed up for your newsletter and look forward to reading your blog. Well met!

Hi Amrita! Thanks for the entertaining, inspiring and craaaazy blog. I'd like to know how you handle cat food issues. I know dogs can have a vegan diet. Can you make your cats vegan/partially vegan? Keep up the great work and have whatever day you want! David

Hey David! Thanks for reaching out. As for my kitties, they eat high quality raw or Royal Canin biscuits because they are obligate carnivores. I have a dog too and he has no problems eating vegan puppy chow. I believe there are vegan brands crafted for cats, but ideally I like giving them what is best for them. I do feel conflicted, but I would only do what is best for their health. Let me know what you think! :)

Hi Amrita. A dog can be either but a cat is a Carnivorous therefore should eat meat. I know it's hard feeding your cat meat but it's better for his, or her digestion whereas a dog can be a Vegan and I have heard and seen some wonderful examples of Vegan Dogs... Thanks for the wonderful site, and your wonderful recipes, and I don't actually think your crazy either... Now to the kitchen to make the Orange Tofu...sounds very yummy to me!! <3

Hey Nancye, totally agree with you! Cats need to eat meat and we shouldn't force our views on them as it endangers their health. I hate buying the stuff for them, but I know they need it to lead the longest and healthiest lives possible!!!! PS: Orange Tofu is one of my faves! It's a little spicy so keep an eye out ;)

Sorry but if you buy cat food that contains dead animals, farmed in factory farms and slaughtered for your cat, you're not a vegan. If you're not willing to feed your cat a vegan diet, then you don't get a cat, simple. You can't be a vegan but support the animal agricultural industry just so you can have some house cats.

I am almost double your age, and it literally never occurred to me to respond like that to such a douchelord! So rude on another person's Blog. I would have been a vegan so freaking many years earlier but for one reason.... vegans. The first ones I met were so self-righteous, it was gross and they were like good ol' Brad up there. Cats are carnivores, & I love mine - they aren't like my children, they are my children. Wonderful, magical, mysterious and loving beings! I might have all of you beat, we had EIGHT kitties here for several wonderful years! No one knew, it did not look or smell like a really scary ep of "Hoarders", 2 lived on one side of the house (not a huge house, just luckily on a corner lot!), 2 on the other, 2 were outdoor year round (we all tried to make them come in, they refused) and 2 who were indoor/outdoor. It was so, so fun. It feels weird to only have 3 now, but I still retain all the Cat Lady monikers :) Always good to see other people who love kitties.

Brad, I don't want to be a mean old lady, but a human being should be vegan because meat eating is not sustainable to our planet, not healthy, and cruel... But a cat is a carnivore, period, and that's okay in my opinion... A cat will die if fed only veggies, Brad... Their biology is completely different than us human beings. (Google it dear, and learn.....)

Fantastic response, Vera! No one should force an animal that has specific dietary needs into eating anything other than what is healthy for them.

Hi Brad I totally agree with you! Unfortunately, cats can not speak and tell you what they think of the person who doesn,t eat meat,,,probably they are totally shocked, lol what a double standard, a vegan with cats !,,,,get a bird, girl, it suits you better ......

You are brilliant, Amrita. I came upon your blog due to your sausage rolls recipe, but swiftly was beguiled by chocolate ice (non)cream, and then started in on your hilarious and bang-on responses to some of the earnest people who feel their way is the ONLY way. I have a feeling Brad and Zaz will soften their attitudes as time goes on. Meanwhile, YOU are the BOMB!
